Beautiful Photos of Patagonia by John Collins

SUNRISE, MOUNT FITZROY AND POINCENOT, ARGENTINE PATAGONIA.
The rising sun strikes Mount Fitzroy, Poincenot and neighbouring peaks long before the low lying landscape, Argentine Patagonia.

Patagonia is a region at the southern end of South America, including parts of Chile and Argentina. This region includes the southern portion of the Andes Mountains and is an iconic destination for landscape photographers. There are several national parks in Patagonia, including Los Glaciares National Park and Tierra del Fuego National Park in Argentina, and Torres del Paine National Park in Chile.

Photographer John Collins, from Cork, Ireland, made a trip to Patagonia and has kindly given us permission to showcase some of his photos from the trip. If you’re looking for a location for your next photography trip, or simply interested in some inspiring images, you will enjoy this showcase of John’s work.

If you’re considering a trip to Patagonia, here are some tips straight from John, based on his own experience:

  • Patagonia is a broad area encompassing southern Argentina and Chile. It’s great to do a trip that takes in both, given the long haul travel.
  • El Calafate and the Perito Moreno glacier is the gateway to Argentine Patagonia with good flight connections and plenty of accommodation options.
  • El Chaltén and Los Glaciares National Park is where most photographers will want to spend time to experience the drama of Mount Fitzroy and Cerro Torre. Trekking is well established here and easy to navigate. Some of the treks are long but very worthwhile.
  • I chose early autumn/fall, to get some fall colours and hopefully early snow. The downside to choosing this time is unpredictable weather – expect to loose some days when conditions will just ’sock you in’.
  • It’s a long but doable drive across the border to Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. These dramatic mountain and lake landscapes are justifiably considered world class. No amount of time will be enough!
  • A final thing that I would add is that this is really a trip for fit photographers who like to trek and hike…

Thanks to John for sharing his photos with us. Enjoy the showcase below.
