One way to create unique landscape photos that really stand out is to photograph at night. Under the night sky any landscape will look different than it does during daylight hours, and even at the most popular and recognizable destinations you can get photos that will be unique. Grant Collier is highly experienced with night photography and his portfolio is filled with amazing images that capture your attention and interest.
Grant grew up in Colorado and many of his photos showcase the beauty of the landscape of the western United States. His great-great-grandfather, Joseph Collier, was an accomplished photographer who photographed around Colorado more than 100 years ago. Grant re-created many of Joseph’s photographs and then published them side-by-side, showing the changes that had occurred over more than a century.
In addition to that book (Colorado: Yesterday & Today), Grant has published several other books including Collier’s Guide to Night Photography in the Great Outdoors (available in paperback and as an ebook).
If you are interested in learning and mastering night photography I highly recommend this book. You can read my full review of the book here, but in summary, it is the best book I have come across for teaching the art of night landscape photography. The book covers everything you need to know to start capturing night photos that you can be proud of.
In addition to the book, Grant also offers detailed video lessons that provide instructions for post processing your night landscape photos in Lightroom and Photoshop. The videos build on what you will learn with the book, and help to take your work to the next level. He also offers a start-to-finish workflow video for one of his photos, “Orion Over Canyonlands”.
