Autumn Trip to Kilgore Falls (Maryland)

Kilgore Falls is managed by Rocks State Park in northern Maryland. I published a detailed description of the park and falls earlier this year, and I recently made a return trip to photograph Kilfore Falls at a different time of year. I missed the peak autumn colors, but a November visit did have a much different feel than my previous visit in the spring.

Getting to Kilgore Falls is pretty easy, with just about a 5 minute hike. If you go at the right time it can be a very peaceful place. My recent visit on a November weekday allowed me to be the only person in the area, which was great for being able to photograph the falls and enjoy the beautiful setting.

The the flow of water in November was a bit less than what I saw during the spring, but there was still enough water to create a picturesque scene. The short hike back to Kilgore Falls was also made more enjoyable with the falls colors and leaves covering the ground.

One of the things I like about Kilgore Falls is that you can walk around and get lots of different views and perspectives from the rocks on the other side of the water. Be sure to bring a wide angle lens because you can get pretty close to the falls.

The King and Queen Seat

After photographing Kilgore Falls I headed to the other main point of interest at Rocks State Park, which is a tall rock outcropping called The King and Queen Seat. Again, this scene would have been better a few weeks ago with the autumn colors at their peak, but there was still enough color in the surrounding trees to make the scene interesting.

Kilgore Falls is actually separated from the main area of the park. If you’re looking for details on how to find the falls or the King and Queen Seat please see my Guide to Photographing Rocks State Park.
